Where it all began
Mumbai’s street markets remain a favorite for their affordable fashion, vibrant atmosphere, and ever-changing trends. However, shoppers often face challenges such as locating specific stalls, navigating crowded spaces, and dealing with unclear timings or mismatches between online trends and on-ground availability. Shoppin addresses these issues by helping users discover stalls, explore trending products, and access reliable information, transforming street shopping into a smoother and more enjoyable experience.

Research & Discovery
We conducted our secondary research using articles, academic journals, YouTube vlogs, social media pages, government reports, and research papers on urban street markets and informal retail.
As part of our primary research, we visited Hill Road Market to conduct empathy interviews with both street vendors and customers. Our goal was to deeply understand their experiences, challenges, and behaviors around street shopping. Alongside interviews, we also made on-ground observations of footfall, vendor setups, customer interactions, and shopping patterns to gain a holistic view of the market ecosystem.

Persona
To better understand the diverse needs of Mumbai’s street shoppers, we developed key customer personas. These personas represent the different types of people who visit street markets, helping us identify patterns and design solutions that address their unique experiences.

Task Flow:

Problem Statement
Many shoppers miss out on the vibrant street shopping experience due to poor navigation, scattered stall information, and lack of guidance making it overwhelming and frustrating for new and regular customers.

How might we
How might we bring the essence of street shopping into a digital tool that encourages both new and returning customers to explore markets with ease, confidence, and minimal hassle?

Wireframing
We designed wireframes for 22 key screens, moving from rough sketches to mid-fidelity layouts across 2 iterations. Each round was tested with 6 participants via usability sessions.

Iteration and Refinement:
Iteration 1: Explored a red-dominant visual theme to reflect the energy and vibrancy of Mumbai’s street markets. Result: the interface felt visually heavy and competed with the colourful market imagery.
Iteration 2: Shifted to a warm off-white palette with red used as an accent, creating better contrast and giving the market visuals more space to stand out. Result: a cleaner, more balanced and visually cohesive experience.
